Legislation, Scope & Responsibilities

UK legislation; structure of PD5500; design parameters; responsibilities; inspection; documentation; certification.

Materials and Construction Categories

Derivation of design strength, use of Tables K.1-2 to K.1-12; impact testing requirements; construction categories.

Shells Under Internal Pressure

Design of cylindrical shells, spherical shells, domed ends, conical shells, reinforcement of cone to cylinder junctions; pressure testing.

Shells Under External Pressure

Design of cylindrical shells, spherical shells and domed ends; allowable longitudinal compressive stress.

Nozzle Reinforcement

Maximum size of openings; opening geometry; nozzle reinforcement calculations, limits of reinforcement; reinforcement of multiple openings; minimum nozzle neck thickness; reinforcement of openings to Annex F.

Flanges

Narrow face flanges, gaskets, flange finish, bolt loads, flange moments, flange stresses; full face flanges with soft ring type gaskets; full face flanges with O ring seal and metal to metal contact outside bolt circle diameter.

Welded and Bolted Flat Covers

Design of welded or bolted flat covers; reinforcement of openings in flat covers.

Comprehensive course notes are provided together with worked examples to show the application of principal Code rules.

The PD5500 course is designed to be a stand alone two day course covering the application of the Code rules for the design of pressure vessels.
