Introduction and Summary of ASME Section VIII Division 1

History; organisation; code stamps; scope of Section VIII Division 1; structure; design conditions; minimum thickness; material tolerances; marking; documentation; responsibilities; UK legislation.

Materials, Joint Efficiency and Design Stresses

Derivation of design stress, use of Tables 1A & 1B in Section II Part D; allowable longitudinal compressive stress; impact testing requirements; joint efficiencies.

Shells Under Internal Pressure

Design of cylindrical shells, spherical shells, domed ends and conical shells; design of cylindrical shells under combined loading; reinforcement of cone to cylinder junctions; pressure testing.

Shells Under External Pressure

Design of cylindrical shells, conical shells, reinforcement of cone to cylinder junctions, spherical shells and domed ends.

Nozzle Reinforcement

Maximum size of openings; opening geometry; area replacement calculations, limits of reinforcement, strength of reinforcement; reinforcement of multiple openings; reinforcement of large openings to Appendix 1-7; minimum nozzle neck thickness.

Flanges

Flange calculations to Appendix 2, gaskets, flange finish, bolt loads, flange moments, flange stresses; bolt pitch correction factor; flange rigidity.

Welded and Bolted Flat Covers

Design of welded or bolted flat covers & reinforcement of openings in flat covers.

Comprehensive course notes are provided together with worked examples to show the application of principal Code rules.

The ASME Section VIII Division 1 course is designed to be a stand alone two day course covering the application of the Code rules for the design of pressure vessels.

Alternatively FCL offer a two day course specifically designed to address the requirements of the shell and tube heat exchanger designer combining the relevant sessions from the ASME Section VIII Division 1 with additional sections on TEMA rules which include discussion on issues such as tube layout and considerations in shell and tube heat exchanger construction.
